Seeing suffering, injustice, and death around us drives most of us want to improve the situation. Finding the best way to help and then actually helping can be difficult and time-consuming.
One response to this challenge is effective altruism. The research field of effective altruism focuses on the question of how to help others as much as possible, using high-quality evidence and careful reasoning. Also, the effective altruism community takes helping others seriously and focuses its efforts on effectively solving the world's most pressing problems.
If you care about improving the world, it's natural to ask, "where will my donations make the most difference?" The good news is that your donations can have a huge impact.
To maximize the impact of donating we need to do it carefully and wisely. This is particularly important as the best charities are often 10 times more effective than average charities in the same field and hundreds of times better than poorly performing organisations. Some charities can even make a loss. This means that donating €100 to a top charity can do even more good than someone donating €1,000 to a typical charity or €10,000 to a poorly performing organisation.
Working in the field of humanitarian aid or for an NGO is one way to make use of your career, but it is certainly not the only one, and in most cases not the most effective. In its career guide, 80,000 Hours outlines options including careers with direct impact, careers in consulting, policy, research, or careers that aim to fund priority areas by donating a significant portion of their income.
